Onondaga Community College, located in Syracuse, NY is currently recruiting for a Chemical Stockroom Technical Specialist

 

The Chemical Stockroom Technical Specialist is responsible for the full operational management of the Chemistry stockroom and instructional laboratories.
This is a senior-level technical position requiring demonstrated experience in chemical stockroom management, hazardous waste compliance, laboratory preparation, chemical inventory systems, equipment maintenance coordination, and safety oversight.


The successful candidate must have prior experience managing chemical stockroom or laboratory operations in an academic, industrial, or research environment.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Stockroom and Laboratory Operations
  2. Oversee all daily operations of the chemical stockroom
  3. Prepare stock solutions, unknowns, and reagents to precise specifications (molarity, % w/v, % v/v, etc.)
  4. Coordinate laboratory setup and breakdown for multiple concurrent laboratory sections
  5. Verify equipment functionality prior to instructional use
  6. Maintain GHS-compliant labeling and chemical storage practices
  7. Ensure stockroom security and restricted access

Accuracy and reliability are critical. Errors directly impact student safety, regulatory compliance, and academic outcomes.

 

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain and manage current Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, and OCC Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan requirements
  • Oversee hazardous waste accumulation, labeling, storage, documentation, and reporting
  • Complete and maintain Hazardous Waste Forms and related regulatory records
  • Coordinate with the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Environmental Health and Safety personnel
  • Train laboratory instructors and stockroom staff in laboratory safety procedures
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of hazardous chemicals and pressurized gases

Stockroom coverage is required whenever wet laboratories are in session.

 

Equipment and Instrumentation

  • Coordinate routine maintenance and service contracts for balances, spectrophotometers, water purification systems, and related laboratory equipment
  • Manage gas cylinder inventory and regulator setup
  • Prepare and maintain analytical instruments, including LC-MS, GC-MS, FT-IR, and HPLC systems
  • Schedule service technicians and submit maintenance work orders

Staff Supervision and Training

  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise part-time stockroom staff
  • Assign duties based on training level and laboratory requirements
  • Provide ongoing safety training and operational oversight

Inventory and Budget Support

  • Maintain a comprehensive and accurate chemical inventory system
  • Monitor reagent usage and place timely purchase orders
  • Manage gas cylinder ordering and returns to control rental costs
  • Assist with laboratory supply budgeting and tracking
  • Coordinate proper disposal of surplus chemicals and obsolete equipment

Min Compensation

USD $49,984.00/Yr.

Max Compensation

USD $49,984.00/Yr.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalency
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience managing a chemical stockroom or laboratory operations environment
  • Demonstrated responsibility for hazardous waste handling, regulatory compliance, and required documentation
  • Demonstrated responsibility for maintaining and auditing chemical inventory systems
  • Demonstrated responsibility for laboratory preparation, scheduling coordination, and equipment oversight
  • Experience supervising or directing technical or student staff
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain organized, efficient, and safety-focused laboratory operations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in an academic instructional laboratory environment
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, LC-MS, FT-IR, HPLC)
  • Experience implementing or improving laboratory organization and tracking systems
  • Interest in long-term professional growth within laboratory operations
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish. English and other languages will be considered.

Additional Information:

CSEA position grade 7, anticipated salary is $49,984.  Person hired for the position must meet the minimum qualifications listed here as this hire is approved through Onondaga County Civil Service.
